Preparation For Puberty

Preparation for Puberty is a five-week program designed to help schools teach the sexuality education components of VELS. The service is available to school-aged children in classes five and six to build on students’ learning and experiences about gender, bodies and relationships. It combines the biological, social and emotional aspects of sexuality education.

Program Outline:

  • Session 1 – Introduction to Puberty and Correct Reproductive Anatomy Terminology
  • Session 2 – Conception, pregnancy and birth
  • Session 3 – The physical and emotional changes in puberty and menstruation
  • Session 4 – Body Care and Hygiene
  • Session 5 – Relationships

The program is delivered by Community Health Nurse Bronwyn Grieve, who has 20 years experience as a Paediatric Nurse, a Paediatric Nurse Educator and a High School Nurse. Bronwyn provides puberty education in an age-appropriate, fun and inclusive manner.

Making Friends with Worry

Making Friends with Worry is a fun and interactive educational program that explores worry and anxiety among primary school-aged children. The program focuses on understanding and normalising worry and providing insight into what happens in our brain and body when we experience worry or anxiety.

The program aims to help children understand how worry affects them and learn strategies to utilise when worry persists. We explore how sharing our worries helps us to manage them, and we encourage help-seeking behaviour. We allow children to practise calming strategies together within the session, with resources for teachers to help children consolidate their learning.

This program is suitable for primary school-aged children in kindergarten to Grade 6.

This course is delivered in schools at a time suitable for the school and the students. We recommend a 30-minute session for children in kindergarten to Grade 2 and a one-hour session for children in grade 3 to Grade 6.

Making Friends with Worry is supported by Mount Alexander Shire Council.
