Companion Walking Program

The companion walking program is great if you are unable to walk alone for a variety of reasons. You will be joined by an experienced volunteer and walking
time depends on you needs. This program is great for those with needs such as disabilities and social anxiety, which make it difficult to walk with a group of people. You’ll receive one-on-one support and companionship. The walk is great for anyone who needs additional support to walk regularly. A GP clearance may be required.

Introduction to Nordic Pole Walking

Nordic Pole Walking is a low impact exercise that takes the weight off joints while using about 90% of muscles in the body. This can improve strength in the upper arms, shoulders and back muscles. It is more effective than regular walking and reduces strain on the lower body. This is a 10-week program suitable if you want a more intensive walk or wish to improve your mobility. No
experience is required and Nordic poles are available during the session. A GP clearance may be required.

Chair Based Strength Training in Castlemaine

This strength training program is low to moderate in intensity. It involves group-based exercises that are done both sitting and standing. All strength training sessions are guided by either an exercise physiologist or a physiotherapist who will provide you exercises and help throughout the session. This program is suitable if you are wanting to improve your strength,
balance and mobility. There are multiple groups that run during the week which are arranged by level of fitness and function. For new participants, the most appropriate group is determined during the one-on-one assessment with the exercise physiologist or physiotherapist.

Wednesday Exercise & Coffee Club

This group takes part in gentle chair-based and standing strength training. Participants move to music using light weights, and use relaxation and breathing techniques. The class will help you increase your strength, balance and mobility. You’ll meet new people and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Everyone is welcome to take part but priority is given to carers. A My Aged Care referral may be required.  The exercise class is immediately followed by the Coffee Club.

Castlemaine Social Walkers

Enjoy a flat walk around the beautiful Botanical Gardens. You can choose your pace and how far you walk depending on your ability. Great for making friends and being active with the option of walking
alone of with a group. Meet before and after the walk to have a chat if you like. The community health nurse and volunteer will welcome you and you can decide if you want to sit and chat, go for a walk or get your blood pressure taken.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi can increase full body strength, improve balance, improve mobility and improve mental wellbeing. This is a low-impact exercise which involves slow, controlled movements and postures. It is good for people affected by arthritis pain and great for improving relaxation and overall physical and mental health. This program is a weekly Tai Chi
class run by Tai Chi trained volunteers. It is great if you want to enjoy low impact movement in a friendly
environment. The classes run during school terms.
