Rainbow steps is an LGBTIQA+ friendly walking program. It is great if you want to meet like-minded people and make new friends while being active. Enjoy a lovely stroll in the beautiful Botanical Gardens in Castlemaine. Pets are welcome.

Companion Walking Program

The companion walking program is great if you are unable to walk alone for a variety of reasons. You will be joined by an experienced volunteer and walking
time depends on you needs. This program is great for those with needs such as disabilities and social anxiety, which make it difficult to walk with a group of people. You’ll receive one-on-one support and companionship. The walk is great for anyone who needs additional support to walk regularly. A GP clearance may be required.

Introduction to Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking is a low impact exercise that takes the weight off joints while using about 90% of muscles in the body. This can improve strength in the upper arms, shoulders and back muscles. It is more effective than regular walking and reduces strain on the lower body. This is a 10-week program suitable if you want a more intensive walk or wish to improve your mobility. No
experience is required and Nordic poles are available during the session. A GP clearance may be required.

Nordic Walking

This is a Nordic Walking program in Castlemaine
and is ideal if you have some experience in the activity.
This group is led by experienced volunteers. Nordic walking is great for improving movement and muscle strength in the upper arms, shoulders, legs and back muscles. Nordic walking is more effective than walking and reduces strain on the lower body.

Chair Based Strength Training in Castlemaine

This strength training program is low to moderate in intensity. It involves group-based exercises that are done both sitting and standing. All strength training sessions are guided by either an exercise physiologist or a physiotherapist who will provide you exercises and help throughout the session. This program is suitable if you are wanting to improve your strength,
balance and mobility. There are multiple groups that run during the week which are arranged by level of fitness and function. For new participants, the most appropriate group is determined during the one-on-one assessment with the exercise physiologist or physiotherapist.

Wednesday Exercise & Coffee Club

This group takes part in gentle chair-based and standing strength training. Participants move to music using light weights, and use relaxation and breathing techniques. The class will help you increase your strength, balance and mobility. You’ll meet new people and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Everyone is welcome to take part but priority is given to carers. A My Aged Care referral may be required.  The exercise class is immediately followed by the Coffee Club.

Maldon Walking Group

This is a social walking group for the community of Maldon. This walking group is led by volunteers. Join the walking group to enjoy a walk followed by a chat and a cuppa. Dogs welcome! Note, Tuesdays are brisk walkers and some fitness is needed.

Castlemaine Social Walkers

Enjoy a flat walk around the beautiful Botanical Gardens. You can choose your pace and how far you walk depending on your ability. Great for making friends and being active with the option of walking
alone or with a group. Meet before and after the walk to have a chat if you like. The community health nurse and volunteer will welcome you and you can decide if you want to sit and chat, go for a walk or get your blood pressure taken.

Chair Based Strength Training in Maldon

This program is designed to help you to stay as
independent as possible. The program provides a range of enjoyable activities that help improve your health and wellbeing. It is a great program if you want to improve your balance and reduce risk of falls. This is a chair-based program, so is suitable if you require walking aids such as frames or a walking stick.
This supervised strength training program provides you with low and high level exercise options to improve general fitness levels. You will perform guided step-by-step exercises while catching up in a friendly environment. Transport is available if you need it and a GP clearance is required before taking part.
