Volunteering

Volunteers are an integral part of the Mount Alexander Shire community.

Volunteering provides opportunities for residents to become active in their community.

What is volunteering?

Volunteering is time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain and:

  • Benefits the community and the volunteer;
  • Is an activity performed in a not-for-profit sector;
  • Is not a substitute for paid work;
  • Is always a matter of choice;
  • In designated volunteer positions only.

Benefits of volunteering – to you

  • Help you feel part of your community
  • Build new or use existing skills
  • Help you meet new people and bring fun and fulfillment to your life
  • Help you to improve your health and wellbeing through social connection
  • Gives you a sense of satisfaction, pride and accomplishment
  • Participate in fulfilling activities, groups and programs

Choosing a volunteering role

There are many different volunteer experiences available within Dhelkaya Health. The key to choosing the right volunteering role is to find a volunteer position that you would enjoy and are capable of doing.

To help you to decide, consider the following questions:

  • Would you like to work with people?
  • How much time are you willing to commit?
  • How much responsibility are you ready to take on?
  • What skills can you build on or bring to a volunteer role?

For more information about a volunteer role contact us and ask for a copy of our position description.

Getting started

We welcome new volunteers. Dhelkaya Health match’s volunteers to roles that suit their interests and skills against what roles are available.

The minimum age for volunteers is 18 years. Reliability and commitment to regular involvement for a minimum of six months is essential.  We offer ongoing training, support and social events.  Police or NDIS checks are mandatory.

All volunteers complete a registration process that clarifies rights and responsibilities. This process helps us ensure that legal and ethical obligations are met, and that the safety of volunteers, patients and residents are protected.  The application process includes:

  • A completed volunteer application form, and position description
  • Attend an interview
  • Undergo police or NDIS check, referee checks and if applicable, a Working with Children check
  • Vaccination record (3 COVID and 1 current flu)
  • Complete an induction to the organisation and / or volunteering

Dhelkaya Health offers free training and flu vaccinations to volunteers.

Dhelkaya Health is a Child Safe organisation and adheres to our responsibilities under our Child Safe Policy and the 11 Child Safe Standards.

Residential Care Volunteer

Volunteering in residential care is a great way to help new residents make the transition and settle into their new lifestyle.

  • Join the ‘Life Story’ project.  Use your interest in writing, listening and history to help older people tell their stories.  Computer skills preferred.
  • Involve yourself with a small group of people reading poetry, playing bingo, making a mural, singing together, cooking, gardening or other activities.
  • Help people with their meals or some exercise.
  • Entertain residents with your particular talents, be it magic, music, dance, singalongs, choirs.
  • Share your well-behaved pooch with residents who enjoy the company of animals.
  • Borrow library material from Castlemaine Library for residents with specific interests.
  • Deliver light reading and magazines.
  • Welcome new residents and help them adjust to their new home.
Trishaw Pilot Volunteers
Trishaw Pilot riding trishaw through park with two passengers tucked under a crocheted rug

A trishaw is an electric bike which allows a ‘pilot’ to take a passenger in a comfortable and safe seat into the outdoors for a cycling experience.

Our trishaw program runs in conjunction with Cycling Without Age (Castlemaine).

We’d love to recruit more volunteer pilots who can take aged care residents living in Dhelkaya Health’s residential aged care for bike excursions.

If you or someone you know might be interested, please do get in touch.

Our Social Support Service runs planned activity groups and respite services in the community. Clients include frail and older people, carers and adults living with a disability. Our volunteers help support the program and its clients through:

L2P Mentor Volunteer

The TAC L2P Program matches learner drivers with fully licensed L2P volunteer mentors. Using a sponsored vehicle, the learner and their mentor go out driving, working toward gaining the required 120 hours of driving practice.

TAC L2P volunteer mentors take part in a full training program to ensure they’re well prepared to mentor a learner driver and understand the role of a supervising driver. Learners participating in the program also have access to free driving lessons with a professional instructor to build their skills before getting on the road with a volunteer mentor.

There are a few criteria we need volunteer mentors to meet:

  • be over 21 years of age
  • hold a current full Australian driver’s licence
  • have a satisfactory driver licence history report
  • be medically fit to drive (we may discuss this further through the application process)
  • not be currently working as a professional driving instructor
  • can commit approximately one hour per week.

You’ll also be asked to provide:

  • a valid (volunteer) Working with Children’s Check
  • a satisfactory National Police Check

Application process

To be considered for the TAC L2P program, learners and volunteer mentors must complete an application form and undergo an assessment.

Apply online by visiting the Transport Victoria website (choose Dhelkaya Health as the location from the drop-down menu).

Youth Mentor Volunteer
Older man helping young man use a power drill

Adolescence can be a challenging stage of life. A young person might be facing some personal challenges in their life such as difficulties at school, family instability, trouble with their peers, or indecision about vocational goals. Some of the young people come from backgrounds of economic and social disadvantage.

Research shows that mentoring can make a real difference in a young person’s life. It builds the relational wealth of a young person and the more quality relationships a young person has in their life, the more their resilience, self-esteem and confidence grows.

Our youth mentoring volunteers all have a desire to have a positive influence on a young person’s life. But they are also willing to be influenced by their young person!

What is involved in becoming a Youth Mentor?

After the initial screening and training, mentors are then matched one-on-one with a young person who is willing and keen to have a mentor in their life. You will receive training in youth mentoring and ongoing support from the Youth Mentor Program Coordinator.

Mentors are usually matched with a young person based on their gender and shared interests. Once matched, the mentor and young person will decide together how they would like to spend their time.

We recommend that the mentor and young person arrange to meet up regularly (i.e. an hour a week or two hours a fortnight) and do whatever it is they are interested in doing together. No or low-cost activities are encouraged such as bushwalking, going to festivals, cooking or building things together.

We encourage mentors to commit to their young person for 12 months. Our volunteers have a code of conduct to guide ethical practice, and the young people have their own code of conduct too.

How do I get involved?

If you are interested in becoming a Youth Mentor, please call us and ask to speak to the Youth Mentor Program Coordinator.

Please note that all of our volunteers must undergo comprehensive screening checks including a Police check and a Victorian Working with Children Check prior to commencing volunteering with us.
