Celebrate with a personalised assessment with Dhelkaya Health’s Falls and Balance Service
Falls are often a significant health concern for older adults that can lead to serious injuries, loss of independence, and a reduced quality of life. April Falls Month is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impacts of falls and to promote the latest and best practice in falls prevention strategies.
With nearly one in three people over 65 experiencing at least one fall each year, fall prevention is critical. Fall risks increase with age, and many falls result in injury or hospital stay. However, with the proper intervention, these risks can be significantly reduced, allowing people to maintain their independence and confidence. Dhelkaya Health has a specialised outpatient Falls and Balance Service in the local community, empowering our locals to live safely and confidently. Appointments are available at both our Castlemaine and Maldon campuses.
Dhelkaya Health’s Falls and Balance Program takes a comprehensive approach to preventing falls. The service brings together a dedicated team of physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, podiatrists and occupational therapists, all working collaboratively to create personalised care plans that address strength, balance, mobility, home safety and individualised goals.
“We know that falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults, but the good news is that they’re often preventable,” said Darya Behrangrad, Physiotherapist at Dhelkaya Health. “Our goal is to help individuals regain their strength and confidence, ensuring they can carry out daily activities without fear of falling.”
“Our team works together to create a holistic care plan that considers the full spectrum of a person’s health. Whether it’s through exercise, home modifications, or regular check-ins, we ensure that our clients feel supported every step of the way,” says Ellie Williams, Occupational Therapist.
The Falls and Balance Team offer one-on-one tailored assessments and treatment. However, one of the service’s standout offerings is the Better Balance Group, a group exercise and education program designed to improve balance, strength, and confidence. “It’s not just about exercises; it’s about building mental resilience. Many participants leave feeling more confident in their ability to move safely throughout their day,” explained Rebecca Dine, Exercise Physiologist at Dhelkaya Health.
Alongside the Better Balance Group, Dhelkaya Health has actively engaged with the local community through education sessions in Newstead, Harcourt, Castlemaine, and Maldon. These sessions offer valuable and practical information on fall prevention, home safety, and strategies to maintain balance and strength. “We’ve found that many people in the community are eager to learn how to prevent falls,” said Jenny Miko, Community Health Nurse. “By offering free education sessions in local towns, we can reach people who may not yet be aware of the benefits of fall prevention or who are unsure where to start”.
