Carers are the quiet achievers of our health and social care systems. Often family members or friends, they provide essential day-to-day support for people living with chronic conditions, disabilities, or the impacts of aging. Yet in caring for others, carers often set aside their own wellbeing.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 3 million Australians identified as carers in 2022—nearly 12% of the population, a number that continues to grow each year. These figures reflect the increasing demands placed on carers, and the importance of supporting them in their vital role.
Dhelkaya Health – Supporting carers
At Dhelkaya Health, we recognise the invaluable contribution of unpaid carers and offer a range of support options through our Social Support Services. Our programs provide not only practical respite, but also social connection, peer support, and a chance for carers and those they support to thrive.
One such offering is the Monday Respite Club, where participants enjoy engaging group activities like local bus trips, art and craft, strength training, and shared meals. For carers, this time provides a much-needed opportunity to rest, attend appointments, or simply enjoy a few uninterrupted hours.
Ruth, a local carer for her husband Paul, shares how the program has helped them both:
“The Monday Respite Group and Wednesday Strength Training have been fantastic for Paul, who lives with Parkinson’s disease. The groups give him routine, social interaction, and stimulating activities that lift his mood. While he’s out, I can plan my day, attend appointments, and enjoy some independence. It’s made a big difference to both our wellbeing.”
Supporting mental health
Research shows that structured social support programs play a crucial role in enhancing the mental health and resilience of carers. A meta-analysis in the Australian Journal of Rehabilitation Counselling found that participation in social support group activities reduces feelings of isolation and stress, while promoting emotional connection, purpose, and enjoyment. These programs provide a vital outlet for carers to recharge—helping to prevent burnout, build confidence, and improve overall wellbeing.
At Dhelkaya Health, we recognise that supporting the mental health of carers is just as important as meeting the physical needs of those they care for. In addition to respite groups, Dhelkaya Health also facilitates several peer support programs:
- Parky Pals, a monthly support group for people living with Parkinson’s and their carers, meets on the third Friday of each month at the Castlemaine Golf Club.
- Cancer Support Group, held on the first Thursday of the month at Coffee Basics, offers a welcoming space for people navigating cancer—whether recently diagnosed, in treatment, or in recovery.
- A Dementia Carer Support Group is also in development, providing practical advice and a safe space for carers to share experiences. Expressions of interest are now open.
Our Social Support Services are available for adults aged 18+ and offer both centre-based and community-based group activities. We also assist clients and their carers in navigating systems such as My Aged Care and the NDIS, connecting them to relevant community resources as care needs change.
If you’re a carer, or know someone who is, we invite you to connect with our team and explore the supports available. Together, we can ensure our carers are not only recognised—but also supported to live well.
