Maldon Hospital marks a significant moment in its long and proud history this week as we farewell our committed General Practitioner, Dr Christian Fowler, who is retiring in early November after 37 years of dedicated service to the Maldon community.
Since admitting its first patient on August 21, 1859, Maldon Hospital has witnessed many changes, from timber structures to modern upgrades, including new wards, facilities, and nursing home accommodation. However, what has remained constant is the unwavering commitment to caring for our community – a value embodied by Dr Fowler throughout his career.
Dr Fowler arrived in Maldon in 1988, having spent two years serving the community of Murrayville in north-west Victoria. Since then, he has been the provider of local medical care, offering general practice services from the Maldon Hospital, tending to both locals and visitors through the urgent care clinic, and providing ongoing support to our aged care residents.
In 2023, Dr Fowler was recognised with the Length of Service Award (35 years +) by the Rural Workforce Agency Victoria, honouring his lifelong dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of rural Victorians.
Dr Fowler’s retirement marks the end of an era, but his legacy will remain deeply woven into the fabric of the Maldon community. We extend our heartfelt thanks for his decades of compassionate care, unwavering commitment, and the countless lives he has touched along the way.
The doctors from Goldfields Medical Group in Castlemaine will take over the care of patients at Maldon Hospital and Nursing Home as well as continuing provision of medical services at Maldon Medical Clinic from the beginning of November 2025.
As we celebrate our history and look to the future, we do so with deep gratitude for Dr Fowler’s contribution. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of care, connection, and community.
