In a world where time is precious and life moves fast, choosing to volunteer might seem like a big commitment. But for a growing number of local volunteers, giving just a few hours each week isn’t just worthwhile — it’s life-changing.
A number of volunteers from the Dhelkaya Health community shared their own inspiring story and heartfelt reasons for choosing to give their time. What they all recognise is a deep sense of purpose, connection, and joy that volunteering brings — not just to those they help, but to themselves as well.
For Amanda, volunteering in aged care alongside her dog Tansy is about creating connection and comfort. “I wanted to connect with residents who may not have many visitors,” she said. “It’s really a privilege to be part of their day. Their faces light up when they see Tansy, and it makes me just as happy.” Amanda also highlights a key benefit of volunteering — stepping outside of yourself. “It keeps me from being isolated. And it brightens my day as much as theirs.”
Graham describes himself simply as a “helper.” From volunteering with cycling groups and managing logistics for bike tours to teaching Nordic walking, he’s been giving his time for decades. “Volunteering has opened doors for me — it even led me to walk the Camino Francés in Spain after hearing about it from a fellow volunteer,” he shared.
For Graham, it’s about learning, giving back, and enjoying the social side of volunteering. “You get to be part of a team, pass on your knowledge, and your social life will expand too!”
Sabrina’s journey into volunteering is deeply personal. After experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and poverty, she turned to volunteering as a way to reconnect. “I wanted to give back to the community that supported me,” she said. “It helped rebuild my confidence and gave me a sense of purpose.” Sabrina encourages others to explore the wide range of opportunities. “There’s something out there for everyone, and it truly enriches your life.”
Marie was inspired to volunteer through her church, becoming a Minister of the Eucharist to elderly parishioners. But for her, it’s about more than just spiritual care — it’s about presence, listening, and learning. “Volunteering is a humbling experience every time. I’ve learned so many skills and made new friends over countless cups of tea!”
Paula’s mother was her inspiration, a lifelong volunteer who regularly visited aged care residents. “I’m following her example,” Paula says. She now provides gentle hand and arm massages with essential oils, creating a calming and sensory connection with the people she visits. “It’s become a beautiful part of my life, and I truly feel more connected to my community.”
Across all these stories, a few themes shine brightly: connection, community, growth, and joy. Volunteering isn’t just about giving — it’s also about receiving. Whether it’s building new friendships, learning new skills, sharing special moments, or simply knowing you’ve made someone smile, the rewards are many.
As Amanda put it, “Please don’t hesitate — there are so many areas you can volunteer in, and you’ll get just as much joy as the people you help.”
So, if you’ve ever thought about volunteering — for a few hours a month or a few days a week — take the leap. There’s a whole community waiting to welcome you.
